Just because something is on the calendar does not mean it’s set in stone. Consider some of the items on your calendar to be “penciled in” – that’s literally where the phrase comes from. They can always be replaced if a better opportunity or more important task arises. But it’s better to have something planned than nothing because there’s another expression we’re all familiar with – “better than nothing.” If you’re doing nothing, you’re wasting time.
My grandpa used to say “I don’t know, I haven’t been told yet” when I’d ask him what he was doing that day, implying that my Grandma made all the decisions. While we always laughed at the response, this definitely shouldn’t be your answer to that question. When you wake up, you should already know what you’ll be doing for the day because you’ve thought through and written it out the evening before. You’ve put it in your crystal ball. But, remember the “this or something better” mentality – some of those items are only penciled in because something is better than nothing, but you can always play the better offer game.
Everything evolves. But we don’t get there instantly. The intermediary steps are really important – you have to crawl before you can walk. So take the attitude that this is the best idea you have right now, but it doesn’t mean it’s the final idea. But it’s important to capture it and then let it evolve. Perhaps it will get better. Perhaps it will lead to a better idea.
I was so proud of my wife the other day. We actually left a restaurant without ordering when we realized they had removed several items from their menu and the waitress was rude to us. Normally, my wife hates leaving a restaurant after we walk in the door. I’m fine with it. We’re allowed to change our minds. Life’s too short to do something we don’t want, especially when it’s completely optional.
