The language of time

Prepare yourself. When you start spending your time differently, you will have your critics, people who thing you’re making a mistake, possibly even wasting your life. That’s probably because they don’t understand. And this lack of understanding is partly because of how thoroughly embedded work is in our culture. In fact, the way our society views and values work is reflected in our language.

  • “Earn a living” is such a horrifying phrase that we just accept as normal
  • It’s also an ironic statement because the wealthy don’t earn their living, they exploit the labour of others for their living.

Other countries put a different value on work. In some parts of Mexico, people still take a daily siesta. All over Italy, people take neighborhood walks before dinner. Throughout the day, though, time and punctuality are just not as important as they are here in the United States. Spain – Jandri.

Consider some of these common phrases:

  1. I ran out of time.
  2. I don’t have any time.
  3. I need more time.
  4. Time to kill.
  5. Killing Time
  6. It’s Go Time.
  7. Timeless
  8. Running out the clock
  9. Act your age
  10. In the fullness of time
  11. Once in a blue moon
  12. It’s been a minute
  13. Fountain of youth
  14. Age is only a number
