Do you ever wish life had a fast-forward button like in Adam Sandler’s movie The Clickr? Not me. I wish it had a rewind button so I could go back and do a few things differently and, more importantly, so I could go back and relive some of the best moments of my life.
A lot of people would like a fast forward button, at least evidenced by their language: “I can’t wait for the weekend”; “I can’t wait for winter to be over”; “I can’t wait for school to end”; “I can’t wait to grow up.”
My wife will sometimes say, “I can’t wait for our next vacation.” My response is always the same – “boy, I can.” She’ll then ask if I don’t want to go on vacation, and I say yes, I’m really looking forward to it, but that’s still three months away, and a lot can happen in three months. I don’t want to miss that time.
Hold your horses
Think how much a baby changes in three months. Three months is an entire season of the year. Parents and older relatives will be three months older in three months, and given that they’re on the short side of time, I want to spend as much time with them as possible.
If you regularly find yourself saying “I can’t wait” because you want to get through something negative, maybe consider changing what you do for a living so you’ll enjoy the time more. If you “can’t wait” for something positive, perhaps you need to live in the moment more.
Your “Top Three Things” list can help you recognize all the good things that happen in our day-to-day life. Of course, bad things happen to, but you should also be thankful for the bad times. Remember, life is a roller coaster; you can’t appreciate the highs without a few lows. That said, my uncle says that he prefers not to think of life as a roller coaster with ups and downs but rather as a stone skipping on top of the water—all times are good, but some times are better.
Kids grow up so fast these days they shouldn’t be in such a hurry what we wouldn’t give to go back to that time and relive it
