On the HGTV show Fixer Upper starring Chip and Joanna Gaines, the talented couple would turn old and outdated properties into their clients’ dream homes. They were able to see what wasn’t there and then turn this vision into reality. Ironically, my favorite part of the show was not the new creation but rather “demo day,” when they tore out all the old stuff and started with a blank slate. From there, anything was possible. A twist on demo day is to pretend that you’re moving. When moving, we pack everything up to take to our new home. In the process, we end up touching every item we own, run across stuff we haven’t seen in years, and, inevitably, make some quick decisions about items we no longer need or want.
