If everything has a place, you don’t have to hunt for it. What do you lose most often? Your keys? Your glasses? Your checkbook? Well, then you should have a place for those things.
My wife cleans the house—thoroughly—before the exterminator comes. If we have bugs, she doesn’t want him to think it’s because we’re dirty. We often put things that don’t really have a home, like old comforters, bags of papers, and other miscellaneous junk in the back of our SUV until after he’s gone. We wouldn’t have to do that if everything had a home.
